Asymmetry and Similarity Phenomena in Backwards Masking Experiments Suggest Internal Reconstruction

چکیده
How the brain processes pattern mixtures is not well understood. The prevailing views are 1) that difficult tasks are processed in serial, and easy tasks in parallel 2) in fast image presentations with effective masking leaves little time for re-entrant neural dynamics other than feed-forward, excluding the possibility of top-down processing. We hypothesize that to process pattern mixtures, the brain creates an internal copy which we call reconstruction. This reconstruction process displays difficulty with similarity and asymmetry effects. Our model predicts that Similarity and asymmetry effects should also occur with fast backwards masking 1) indicating neither a strictly parallel nor serial structure 2) suggests that top-down reconstruction occurs even with fast masks because the brain is processing the target and mask as a mixture.

Similarity effects in backward recognition masking.
Auditory backward recognition masking refers to the ability of a masking sound to terminate further perceptual resolution of a test sound presented slightly earlier in time. The present experiments were conducted to determine whether mask/test tone similarity effects in backward recognition masking could be reliably demonstrated. Although similarity effects were found in Experiments 1 and 2, on...
متن کاملSimultaneous pure-tone masking: the dependence of masking asymmetries on intensity.
Phase locking between probe and masker was used in a series of pure-tone masking experiments. The masker was a stationary sine wave of variable frequency; the probe a fixed-frequency tone burst. We have observed that for small frequency separation the masking behaves asymmetrically around the probe frequency. This asymmetry depends on intensity. For a 1-kHz probe at low stimulus levels there is...
متن کاملClassification based on 3-similarity
Similarity concept, finding the resemblance or classifying some groups of objects and study their common properties has been the interest of many researchers. Basically, in the studies the similarity between two objects or phenomena, 2-similarity in our words, has been discussed. In this paper, we consider the case when the resemblance or similarity among three objects or phenomena of a set, 3-...
متن کاملInformation masking: Counteracting the effects of stimulus uncertainty by decreasing target-masker similarity
Previous work has indicated that target-masker similarity, as well as stimulus uncertainty, influences the amount of informational masking that occurs in detection, discrimination, and recognition tasks. In each of five experiments reported in this paper, the detection threshold for a tonal target in random multitone maskers presented simultaneously with the target tone was measured for two con...
